Its been very quiet on here at the moment so I thought I would post what ive been up to...
Over the last few weeks my old Cargo has sat idle as I have been working on an old RR Shadow, I decided it was time to give the old girl a bit of exercise so off I went for a run.
I stopped at a set of traffic lights and put the handbrake on and when the lights changed I dropped the clutch and the cab gave a twist and the engine struggled I looked down at the dash and both brake pressures had dropped to 6 bar at this pressure the handbrake will not release so I revved the old girl to 2500rpm and the pressure slowly began to rise then the handbrake released .
I made for home with the brake pressures hovering around 7.5 bar when I got back home I knocked the engine off and could hear an air leak from around the middle of the bed, I found that the Handbrake Relay Valve (one in front of the back axle) was evacuating the air constantly .
I undone the two 13mm bolts holding it to the chassis and took off the 3 air pipes and got it onto my bench and stripped it down, it was full off crud and the two rubber "O" rings were stuck into the ring grooves and the piston was very stiff to move in the bore, I got the piston out and took off the "O" rings and polished the piston on my polishing mop, then I got my Dremel and put some Solvol Autosol on the little felt mop and polished the bore until it was like chrome, I refitted the rings and reassembled it and the handbrake reacts quickly now and the air pressures stay at 10 bar ;D.
So if you leave your Truck for any length of time keep an eye on the air pressures when re-using it.
Last year during a freezing spell my Cargo suddenly locked up its back wheels and slewed sideways for about 20yds this was due to the same valve sticking open and dropping the air pressure so low the rear brakes came on. at that time I replaced this very valve, so don't be complacent when it comes to your brakes.
