H Alf. I knew it wouldn't be super fast but kinda expected (it being a truck) to pull much better than it does. I'm gonna call in at a local HGV garage tomorrow and see how much they want paying to service it, even though I hate paying for this kind of work! If I knew where everything was I would do the d**n job myself! I have googled for hours but the internet seems void of any useful info about them... Rob. Oh, PS: Not exactly sure how fast I'm going as according to the speedo, it only does 35 tops

If I was you I would find a local Transport Company and wander in the workshop area and ask one of the older mechanics if he would do it as a job on the side, they are very simple to service its just the access on the Horseboxes that can be a problem. as for the speedo/Tachograph the usual cause of slow readings can be the little Tacho Generator on the drivers side of the gearbox, they get bad connections and sometimes pack in altogether.
Hope you get it sorted.
Alf

So I found a place today. Close to home and the chap was everything you could want from a mechanic. Told me he wasn't in the business of 'pulling my balls' so that's good (I think)
Spoke to him about the few issues I have and after a good chat with him, he told me to bring it to him so he can have a look over it and give me a price.
After mentioning the low power, he reeled off a few possibilities so hopefully he will be able to reign in a few of the 130 horses that have escaped over the years. Fingers crossed!
Rob.

let us no what you had done So the mechanic finally called today with his findings. Steering - Adjusted the box and greased the life out of it, sorted. Fuel system cleaned - Glass bowl full of cack. Speedo problem - Apparently the box thing that controls it has been removed (can't remember what he called it) and whoever did it has tried to make the speedo work without it, hence the false reading. Starting issues (low battery power) - Alternator faulty, not charging. Electrician looking at it tomorrow (16th) to see about sorting it. Couple of minor issues found regarding the next test but nothing major. He did say he was concerned about the lack of a tachograph but I have it on good authority that it is not required unless used for 'hire or reward' - Discuss... Ill post again when I have it back and have driven it. Regards, Rob.

So the plot thickens!!
Alternator turns out to be OK. Mechanic tells me there was a dodgy earth lead somewhere so they replaced it. Also the battery isolator switch was knackered so they swapped that too.
When I collected it, he said it would be a good idea to charge the batteries so I did but it barely turned over at all. Went back to him and had a chat, decided the batteries must be goosed so I bought two new ones and guess what, it STILL barely turns over! Just enough to start it up. Going to have a poke about at it tomorrow, ill pop back here and let you know how I got on.

Had said 'poke about' and found the middle terminal on the positive battery lead was loose on the cable. Nut had seized so nipped the bolt with mole grips, spannered the nut up tight and the job is a good one!

I couldn't do any of the stuff he did to it so it would still be running like nutse with wonky steering so no, not really.
Just to add, I tested the batteries at work the other day and it looks like the one that had been doing all the work for so long is shot. The second one is ok so ill hang on to that for now, sure ill find a use for it somewhere...

Glad all is now well with your Cargo, one small word of warning when pairing up batteries make sure they are both exactly the same and the same age otherwise one will drag the other down, I fitted one 1000amp Gel battery on mine and never had any problems in the following 4yrs I had it.
All the best
Alfie

Yeah 1000 Cold Cranking Amps, (not Amp Hr) the truck could stand for 6 months and still spin over and start right up. Alfie
