Come on all, there must be someone needing information or just a bit of banter, I will start it off. I have been very busy working on a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow 2 the owner asked me to check it over as it had been sent to a local garage as the Autobox was slipping in 2nd gear sadly the car was returned to its owner with a fractured exhaust manifold and no forward drive at all and a bill for £1500 they had decided it needed a replacement Autobox so they bought a "secondhand "one and fitted it ...sadly this box was worse than the original!! also when they removed the gearbox they didn't support the engine or remove the exhausts , hence the fractured manifold, well i've found the forward clutch within the box was knackered and the Valve block.... also as there is metal filings in the oil I am in the process of getting another gearbox. i've successfully welded and braced the manifold saving the owner some £400 for a new one. So I will be busy this weekend refitting the manifold and getting the engine cleaned up etc ready for the replacement box arriving next week. Well better go now as Carol has my evening hot chocolate ready lol. Alf

Hope you got your gearbox done Alfie - about to do a fluid change on my Volvo T5's autobox; that should be fun, sucking the d**n oil out via the dipstick tube. One thing I have been doing lately is battling with VOSA to get a darn MOT booked. My unit has been off the road for three months, with no MOT. I have tried relentlessly to get it into Weedon test station, but have recently learned it is to close (along with a gamut of other VOSA stations) next March and they are not taking bookings for MOT's. It seems VOSA are gradually phasing out doing MOT's and will 'lend' their staff out to the external places that offer them........yep, and at £150 a pop (plus trailer hire) as opposed to £95 at a VOSA Test Station. Am going to try Leicester Test Station next week, though there is a 2 month wait list apparently. . . .

Hi Stuart, I am still waiting for the Autobox to arrive until it does I can do no more as ive repaired the Manifold. I did hear that VOSA were shutting Stations what a stupid situation eh, now we will have to pay more for the same results...I am told that the VOSA stations are self supporting apparently and the general feeling among a few mates was if you get a first time pass then you are lucky as they want as much revenue as possible to finance the staff and equipment etc. Hope you get the oil out of the T5 I have just done it with the Rolls I use a PELA pump which is brilliant....saves a lot of time and mess Kind Regards Alf

Hi Alf,
Yep, PELA pump is what I use. It actually belongs to the Farmer whom I rent the unit off, where I keep the Cargo. He lets me use a few bits and bobs of his equipment, for which I am grateful. Am also considering doing an oil change on the Cummins - but not sure it's really worth it for something that does around 3k kilometres a year (or less). Last changed late 2010. ....and of course, 37 litres of oil, doesn't come cheap, plus two filters.
Any classic cars I had in the past that did around 1-2k miles a year, the oil would come out every 4 years or so (I don't believe in the 'oil degrades with time myth, without use'). It perhaps does, but not THAT much!!
T5 is soldiering on. 225,000 miles, oil changed every 6k with Mobil 1 (I bought it with 160k on the clock). Still pulls like a train, no oil consumption. I do think Volvo petrol engines, rival somw diesels for mileage, if properly looked after.

Hi Stuart, 37ltrs of oil that's gonna cost, I suppose if it holds that much oil then changes wont need done below 5k mls surely..... I also agree that Volvo make good car engines, I had an old 6cyl 164 which had been dogged from day one and had over 200k on it when I bought it, It gave me no probs at all right up until I accidentally pulled the gearshift into reverse at 70mph, it emptied its gearbox contents all over the road . I also had a BMW 523ISE which had 34k on it and needed a new engine due to Nicasil problems Ive never bought another since. Take Care Alfie
