Hello everyone , a while ago I read that someone had a special battery with gel in it. They said it was better at starting their vehicle in cold weather. I have a 0811 cargo horse lorry and I have difficulty starting her in cold weather and I wondered if I should invest in one of these but I can't find the conversation it was mentioned in, I thought it would look better if I had some knowledge before I went to the garage! Many thanks Jennifer

Personally I have never heard of gel batteries for starting, but it doesn't mean they don't exist Our 0813 has two regular lead acid batteries and starts fine. Maybe a second battery is the way to go?

Many thanks Jennifer Hi Hi Gel Batteries use a gel instead of acid an tend to be an excellent alternative to Lead acid as they are well suited to deep discharge ie cold starts etc , but the downside is that they are expensive, if you intend to replace the one Battery, I suggest going for an AGM type this stands for Advanced Glass Mat which is a better alternative to Lead Acid and cheaper than Gel. Under normal circumstances the 6 cyl Cargos are excellent starters when the coldstart system on the fuel pump is working but dreadful if it isnt. there are a few posts on here mentioning how to test/repair this system. One word of warning...if you intend to fit a twin battery system "which is a good way to go" make sure BOTH Batteries are identical and both new otherwise one poor one will drag the other down. Hope this drivel helps Alfie

I have only heard of gel batteries being leisure batteries before. They were originally designed for deep discharge so were perfect for deep discharge with no memory effect, Gel car battery models are also referred to as VRLA batteries. ... A car battery cell that is designated as a gel battery has far less acid than conventional deep cycle car batteries, and this is a tremendous advantage for users. The interior of the battery is filled with a gel electrolyte rather than a battery acid. they were then fitted to Mobility Scooters where they excel and Motorcycles were also fitted with them, I fitted I x 1000amp on my Cargo and I could leave the truck for months and it would spin the engine over as if they were no injectors in it lol. sadly I left it on the truck when I sold it.
