Hi richardg,
If all the balljoints are ok then its possible to adjust the endfloat play in the steering box, there is a nut on the bottom of the box with a screw in the centre, firstly raise BOTH wheels clear of the ground and with the engine OFF rock the steering wheel and see how much play you have. If you feel this play is excessive then loosen the locknut and turn the centre screw clockwise until the play is minimal, run the steering lock to lock making sure there is no binding at any point, if there is then back off the adjustment until the steering feels smooth, start the engine and see if all is well.
Please note you must not tighten the adjustment too tight otherwise you will cause damage to the steering box and could cause binding when on lock to lock.
Hope this helps
Alf
