hi all, just getting my head round the missus 0813 horsebox (obviously don't know the history of it). I have some issues lack of power to the living and horse quarters but am going to replace a couple of inline fuse holders as a start and go from there. main question is how many batteries should this have? it is a 1987 model. I have found the batteries just behind the cab on the near side. are these the main truck batteries? there is currently only one battery connected? the battery also seems to lose power even though there is an isolator fitted. just trying to sort one thing at a time and finding out what should be what.

Yep, those should be the truck's starter batteries. You should be able to start with one proper Cargo battery, though two is better. Has yours got a tacho? If so it could be the tacho draining the battery, though I notice you have a cut off switch.

thanks Fred it has got a tacho but the isolator seems to kill everything (ticking of the tacho stops with the isolator). not quite sure why two batteries are fitted but only one connected. it starts every time but is a bit laboured at times. both battery dials in the cab are currently reading about 9v. am off work in a weeks time and thinking of getting both batteries off and sticking a battery tester across them. also checking the cell water levels. am I right in thinking two batteries would be better since the truck can stand for 2 or 3 weeks at a time. it is 12v then not 24v. have made a discovery on the lack of power to the living area. there is an inline fuse holder for the supply to the living, if I put a meter either side of it I get approximately what the cab dials are showing. so I think that is getting swapped as well

Yep, you 0813 will be 12V, the bigger tractor units are 24V. This was a revelation to me when we got our first Cargo!

Mine has the two batteries for the cab and a leisure battery under the sofa for living and horsebox. One of mine was kaput when I got it so changed them both, been fine since

Hello
Tried to start the 813 today and the battery sounded really flat. Then after several times trying, suddenly nothing, when I turn the ignition key nothing at all, not even the sound of a cold engine and low battery trying to start. Is that because I completely drained the battery trying to start it? I have an isolator fitted so don't know why battery is flat. If it needs replacing, I have seen price £200+ - is that regular price? Realistically the box gets used about once a month, and in the cold is usually hard to start. I am completely non technical - is there any easy way of explaining to me how to get the cold start thing working? Also, does anyone know any Cargo experts in Norfolk - really need help with this old box. Spent a lot of money on it earlier in the year and bit fed up that can't start it easily.
Thanks for any info
Claire

That's a lot of money for just one battery. I bought a generic battery with my Halfords trade card and it was around £100. It's all down to the cranking amps so don't pop to Halfords and ask for a Cargo battery, they will say they don't do them. I will have to go and read it cos I can't remember the numbers! I know for a fact a Cargo will start on two diesel transit batteries, in dire circumstances! I won't do that long term though.

Mine where just short of £100 each but the battery connectors AND solenoid where faulty also.
I think if I was you Claire, I would call out an auto electrician and have them check the batteries and what have you. Might save you some money in the long run.
Hope this helps, Rob.
