Took mine for test a couple of days ago and as it is just under 25 years old (officially 25 on 1/1/15), I had to also book a 6 yearly tacho calibration as well to get it through the MOT. It failed the tacho check on 'not changing modes between other work and rest' when the mode switch is changed. The tacho head is fairly new (2008 fitted) and has only done around 9000kms since. I didn't bother putting it on to the test lane thereafter as it wasn't worth it (knowing it would fail). Very cruel; as the tacho is essentially a speedo on a Private HGV solo tractor. So no shows for me this year and will have to wait until next Spring for another MOT attempt. This is getting bloody expensive and frustrating. Cost me £191 in aborted test fee and tacho check fee. They then asked me if I would like a new tacho head fitting at just under £400 - no thanks I said, I'll wait until she's 25 and exempt from such crass legislation (that lumps all trucks in the same category, until they are 25)....

Sorry to hear that Kid, I am lucky in that mine is Tacho Exempt, I can understand your frustration, mine is now overdue for its test and is booked in for 1st August so fingers crossed she will pass, I hate going to the testing station as you never know whether the tester is going to be hard on the truck or take into consideration its age. Take Care Alfie

Take Care Alfie To be honest, mine is essentially 'Out of Scope' regarding tacho use according to two senior VOSA officers I asked recently. The utterly ludicrous thing is though, regardless of that fact, the tacho still has to be calibrated every two years up to 25 years old (as you well know I'm sure). The law should delineate better between 'Private HGV's' and those vehicles in proper commercial use. I take it when you say your's is exempt, you mean it's exempt from 2 yearly calibrations as it's over 25?? I think all Private HGV's should be tacho exempt regardless of age. Do you have to fill in a form on MOT day and sign the declaration stating she's exempt and over 25. I can't wait for that day.... Anyway, enough ranting from me, good luck with your test. I'm sure she will be fine!! All the best, Stu.

Thanks Stu,
Mine was declared tacho exempt when I asked for a replacement plating certificate and when I was given it I noticed it had Tacho Exempt stamped on it, I don't have to fill in any certificates or declarations at mot time.
I agree entirely it ludicrous that vehicles classed as for private use should still be required to have an up to date tested calibrated and working Tachograph it doesn't make sense.
Kind Regards
Alf.

Just out of interest - when you applied for the replacement plating certificate, what age was she and what taxation class??? Cheers, Stu

Just a quick thankyou as I didn't know about the tacho exemption until I came on here. Also, not sure when this happened, but due to DVSA (VOSA) test centres closing, trucks now have to be taken loaded to test, as most of the private Authorised Test Facility (ATF) centres don't have the load simulator for the brakes.

It's a way off now, but will the HGVs be MOT exempt at 40?

It's a way off now, but will the HGVs be MOT exempt at 40? I would imagine if they are registered as private goods vehicles then yes. this comes into force in May next year so hopefully we will find out before then. Alfie
